BMW R1250R and R1250RS

BMW has been masterful at leveraging one platform to serve several purposes. Perhaps none more successfully and artfully than the R1250 series, which with select changes can be the R1250GS ADV machine at one end and the much more elemental R1250R Roadster at the other. In between—in BMW’s model hierarchy as in life—lies the R1250RS, a modern “rennsport” model that’s part everyday streetbike and part lightweight sport-tourer. 

The R1250R uses BMW’s latest ShiftCam engine, whose two sets of camshaft profiles provide both variable camshaft timing and lift, although with a simpler method than other manufacturers use. BMW gets both more horsepower and more torque from the liquid-cooled boxer engine, while ride-by-wire technology makes the transition from low-rpm to high-rpm cam timing seamless. Or nearly so; we wouldn’t want to take all the fun out of it, would we? Both the R1250R and R1250RS get great performance from this modern-day Boxer engine; its inherent smoothness makes it idea for city riding on the Roadster and longer-distance touring on the RS. Just as BMW intended.

Like all modern BMWs, both the R1250R Roadster and the R1250RS have CANbus electrical architecture, which makes them ripe for DENALI’s industry-first CANsmart system. CANsmart is a smart accessory controller CANsmart uses the brains already aboard the BMW to control two sets of lights, a crazy-loud SoundBomb horn, and a B6 LED brake light all from the existing handlebar controls. As for mounts, choose from either fender mounts for the smaller DENALI lights or Articulating Clamp Mounts for the fork tubes, ideally suited for the semi-naked R1250R Roadster. The big clamps can handle the full range of DENALI LED motorcycle lights, while the fender mounts are best suited to the smaller lights, the DM, D2 and compact S4. If you have BMW optional lights mounted to an engine guard, you have another option: DENALI has a converter kit to mount any DENALI auxiliary light to the stock mount. It’s a simple, inexpensive way to use what you already have.
