In 1997 the first generation Forester hit the market as one of the early crossover SUVs. Based on the Impreza chassis with the drivetrain of the Outback, it made a splash in the market--pun intended--as a great go-anywhere vehicle.
Like most of Subuaru’s popular line up, the drivetrain contained a Boxster engine paired to an all-wheel-drive transmission. Subaru’s drivetrain recipe is a simple yet effective one, allowing most of their line up to be rugged and able to tackle most terrains.
New for the 2021 Subaru Forester, the Limited model is available with a seven-speed manual mode for the continuously variable automatic transmission. The only engine option available throughout the line is the architecturally the same 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine that powered the first generation.
The stout 4 cylinder engine makes 182 horsepower and can tow 1500 pounds. The engine is paired to a traditional continuously variable automatic transmission putting power down to all four wheels. With the only option engine being the 4 cylinders, it struggles compared to bigger, turbocharged engines from competitors.
The 4 cylinder engine does have some positives though, it retains good mpg and a comfortable ride. The forester boasts a quality interior and plenty of cargo space. While the Forester isn’t the do-it-all SUV, it makes for a perfect grocery getting or road trip vehicle.
