The Subaru WRX has always been based on the Subaru Impreza, which first hit the road in 1992. From its debut, Subaru created a trim named the "WRX" which stood for "World Rally eXperimental" and as the name suggests, the WRX was a homologation of their rallycross version of the Impreza.
