Toyota Land Cruiser
More than 80 years ago, Toyota started manufacturing cars, and in the 1940s, they first started to make a copy of the US army’s military Jeep. During the Korean war, the US military called on Toyota to make 100 copies of the Willys Jeep. By 1954, now called the Land Cruiser, Toyota’s go-anywhere SUV was in regular production. From that point, they grew to include pickup trucks, station wagons, troop carriers, fire engines, and more, and they were shipped around the world.
In 1960, the now-classic Toyota FJ40 came to North America and was an immediate bestseller. The classic short-wheelbase SUV was sold with minor changes into the 1980s, along with long wheelbase FJ40 pickups and wagons.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser introduced in 2006 was inspired directly by the FJ40 and copied much of its style. The FJ55 was introduced in 1967 and sold until 1980 as a long-wheelbase wagon with more refinement than the FJ40.
More refinement was to come, and a funny thing happened; the Toyota Land Cruiser began to be known as a luxury vehicle. Through a series of generations, FJ60, FJ80, FJ100, each more luxurious than the next, Toyota continued to produce one of the most capable off-road vehicles in the world. The 1998 Land Cruiser FJ100 was so grand it didn’t take much for it to be sold as the Lexus LX470, though real off-roaders lamented the loss of a solid front axle.
In 2008, the new FJ200 Land Cruiser and Lexus LX570 were introduced, sharing much with the Toyota Tundra pickup. Now with a 5.7 liter V8, they feature luxury and driver safety features galore but still include a host of advanced off-road features. Unfortunately, after 62+ years, 2021 will be the official last year for the Toyota Land Cruiser in the USA.
There are plenty of ways to improve early Toyota Land Cruisers with LED lighting. A pair of DENALI D7 round LED pods blast 15,000 modern lumens of light more than 1500 feet down the trail while only drawing 5 amps each. The 4in round DR1 LED spotlights also have a classic look but with 21st-century performance. Improve your ability to be seen by adding T3 surface mount white/amber or red/amber lights to use as daytime running lights, auxiliary turn signals, and brake lights.
If you cruise the later luxury Land Cruiser, DENALI lights are a great addition. Add a pair of square S4 pods to your roof rack, bull bars, or even on the back bumper to turn day into night and help you get to your cabin or hitch up your trailer. A pair of small D2, 2.5” round, or DM, 2” round, mini pods can be mounted nearly anywhere as fog lights in white or amber. These all can be hooked up with the DataDim plug and play controller to give dual intensity controlled via the factory high beam switch.
