KTM 1190 Adventure Lighting & Accessories
KTM 1190 Adventure / R
Hard-core adventure enthusiasts had gathered around the KTM 950 Adventure and, later, the 990 Adventure as though they were the True Originals, the adventure tourers with the closest ties to KTM’s dominant enduro and motocross machines, albeit with twin cylinders, big tanks, and the bravado to go anywhere. Adventure riders were skeptical at the introduction of the 1190 Adventure, a machine intended to replace the older 990 Adventure and bring modern electronics to the ADV class. (The 990 could boast ABS and fuel injection, but its early LC8 engine was hardly cutting edge by 2013.)
Those concerns didn’t last long. The 1190 Adventure, which arrived in the U.S. by 2014 and joined by the 1190 Adventure R a year later, proved to be the best combination of the 990 Adventure’s fun side and the power and smoothness of the LC8 engine borrowed (and heavily modified) from the RC 8 sportbike. KTM added ride-by-wire control, ride modes, electronically adjustable suspension, new bodywork, and the then-new 19/17-inch wheel combinations for a good choice of rubber. KTM continues to build from this base, all these years later.
For DENALI, the KTM 1190 Adventure and 1190 Adventure R are right in our wheelhouse. There are several light mounts available, including one that’s a bike-specific version that bolts a sturdy powder-coated steel fixture to the KTM’s upper fairing and supports any number of DENALI lights, from the mega-bright D7 to the quad-LED D4 and on down to the compact DM and D2 lights. What’s more, since KTM built the 1190 Adventure with CAN bus technology, which the 950/990 Adventure did not have, you can fit CANsmart. CANsmart enables control of four definable circuits through the KTM’s handlebar switches. Here are just some of the things CANsmart can do: independently control two set of lights; key those lights to the bike’s stock high beam so they can be run brighter with the high beams on; flash to pass, where the lights pulse after you blip the high-beam switch; cancel with turnsignal, which turns off the corresponding auxiliary light when you turn your turn signal so auxiliary lights don’t overpower your turnsignal; and special braking features with the B6 tail light installed. CANsmart also has “dongle functionality,” which enables additional features in the ABS control unit and the ECU and remembers settings removing the need to reset the ABS and traction-control settings.
Plus, there’s a special bracket for the SoundBomb horn and a special plug&play B6 tail light system that doesn’t require CANsmart; you can mount these as a single B6 or as a pair of them, which will give the back end of your 1190 Adventure lights as bright as you have up front.
