For a company so well known for its adventure touring motorcycles, the KTM 1290 Super Duke was something of a surprise when it debuted in 2014. Sure, KTM had wild and wooly Dukes before—important naked bikes with a touch of dirtbike DNA thrown in—but the 1290 raised the bar several notches. The 1301cc engine made enough power to pull a good sized horse trailer—this may be an exaggeration—and loft the Duke’s front wheel with contemptuous ease. Electronics made it all that much more controllable.
The funny thing about the KTM 1290 Super Duke was that is actually quite capable when it’s not scaring the bejesus out of other riders at your local track day or ripping up the nearest piece of twisty road. With a moderate riding position and much more weather protection than you’d expect, the Super Duke was quite good in the day-to-day: commuting, light touring, weekend jaunts. Just under the surface, of course, was a menacingly fast motorcycle, but it could chill just as well.
The KTM's ability to do more than chew through rear tires makes it a candidate for many items from the DENALI LED motorcycle light menu. If you’re going to use your Super Duke for daily commuting or badass touring, you’ll need better lights. DENALI has those, with both Clamp Style mounts for the fork tubes or fender mounts (uh, for the fender), it’s possible to locate every LED driving light in the DENALI catalog to your KTM 1290 Super Duke or Super Duke R. Go even further by adding DENALI’s DRL light pods, which are lightweight and super bright for their size, and make your KTM even more visible to others on the road. (They do work better when the front wheel isn’t pointing at the sky, but that’s on you.)
Best of all, because the Super Duke 1290 is a CAN bus-equipped KTM, it can use DENALI’s exquisite CANsmart Auxiliary Light Controller. Not only does CANsmart make installation a breeze—no wirecutting or soldering—it makes controlling your lights and other accessories so much more elegant. You can manage two sets of lights, one SoundBomb horn (the only thing louder than the Super Duke’s personality), and a B6 tail light (either single or a double pack) without having to tack on extra switches. CANsmart controls those accessories seamlessly and uses the KTM’s original hand controls. Which is good, because the KTM 1290 Super Duke pretty much demands you keep your hands on the controls at all times.
