The classic dual-sport conundrum is this: How do you make a motorcycle work okay on the road and okay on the trail, and not completely suck at both? Do you aim the model at the street, with a bigger, heavier engine and therefore sacrifice off-road capability? Or do you split the middle, cutting displacement and weight a little (but not down to bare bones) and in so doing give up a little on-road comfort for just a bit more capability on single-track dirt trails and, oh, maybe in the sand? That last tactic explains the Suzuki DR-Z400 to a tee.
The knock on the DR650, the Honda XR650L, and to some extent the evergreen Kawasaki KLR650 is that their engines are really old tech, leftovers from the 1980s. Not so the DR-Z’s four-valve, liquid-cooled thumper. While today the DR-Z’s five-speed engine seems antiquated next to the latest motocrosser-based engines, it was hot stuff when the DR-Z400 was introduced in 2000. Lighter, more powerful, and more dirt focused than the DR650, the DR-Z400 found instant and enduring success.
Suzuki, as it did with the DR650, has pretty much left the DR-Z alone, so the bike is well supported by the aftermarket, including DENALI. As with the DR650, the DR-Z’s headlight is nothing to post to social media about, and that’s how the DENALI the M7 DOT-approved LED headlight with a special mount came to be. This combo, with separate high- and low-beam LED arrays plus a halo-style lighting ring that you can use as a daytime running light (DRL) fits behind the DR-Z’s plastic faux number plate easily. It not only looks the part, it puts a lot of light on the road and can illuminate the trees, rocks, canyon walls or whatever else you’re going to run into during your impromptu night enduro.
Because the DR-Z’s mechanicals are well exposed, there’s no bike-specific light mount. Better are the two sizes of Articulating Bar Mounts, one that spans 39mm to 49mm (perfect for the upper fork legs) and one that ranges from 21mm to 29mm, ideal for engine guards. Either of these mounts can carry any of DENALI’s low-weight, high-intensity LED motorcycle driving lights. You want more? (Of course you do.)
