Honda CRF250L Rally and CRF300L Rally
If Honda’s own XR650L has been around near forever, the company’s smaller-displacement dual-sport machine is there to balance out the age groups. Introduced for 2017 and built from an all-new small-displacement dual sport that arrived only in 2014 (as the CRF250L), the CRF250L Rally carries the visual confidence of a rally bike—including the frame-mounted fairing, narrow/tall windscreen, and LED lights—but is, underneath, a peach of a dual-sport motorcycle. The four-stroke single doesn’t make so much power that’ll it scare newer riders, but it also has torque everywhere and an indomitable spirit that never says die. And it’s a Honda, so you can probably run it without oil, or air, or on the surface of Mars, and I’ll last forever.
The Rally has a bit more suspension travel than the CRF250L and a half-gallon more fuel on board, but it’s the same sweetheart of a dual-sport. The added weather protection makes longer rides more comfortable, without adding much weight, so the CRF’s abilities on moderate trails remains intact. And like all the 250cc ADV machines you grew up with—before we called them ADV, anyway—the CRF-Rally is a true broad-bander, able to knock about on trails, hit the city streets for school or shopping, and generally do all the things motorcycles used to do before we go so specialized.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t improve the CRF250L Rally’s lighting. (We can do it for the CRF300L Rally, too, which finally came to the States in 2021.) While there isn’t a model-specific light mount, the CRF250L Rally and 300L Rally have plenty of sticky-outie places that can be used to install lights. The largest of DENALI’s innovative Clamp Mounts will put a pair of LED auxiliary lights on the Honda’s beefy inverted fork tubes for optimal placement. As always, any of the DENALI clamp mounts are designed to carry any of our super-popular LED driving lights. The compact and affordable S4 is a good fit, with its lightweight case, powerful four-LED lamp array, and dual-use optics—you get close-in coverage with the built-in flood pattern, and long-distance visibility from the two LEDs in spot-pattern optics—make the most of the S4’s versatility. You can also mount the popular D4 quad-beam light or the amazing D7, whose circular face holds seven 10-watt CREE LEDs for a spectacular lighting pattern and beam distance.
The CRF250L Rally and 300L Rally can also benefit from DENALI’s six-LED B6 tail light, T3 Signal Pods (replace those ugly stock turnsignals), and SoundBomb horn. Just because the CRF-Rally is among Honda’s simplest and most affordable adventure bikes doesn’t mean it can’t be easily upgraded.
