The modern Land Rover Defender was introduced in 2019 with a stylish retro design similar to the new Bronco. This was a big deal, as the Defender was previously discontinued in 2016 after decades of being in production. The new Defender is completely new without sharing any components of the previous generation. The legendary Defender is smaller and positioned lower than the Discovery, but it’s one of the most capable off-roaders in Land Rover’s lineup. Powering the new Defender are two available turbocharged engines. The base engine is the same 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder used in the Discovery.
The other engine option is a stout 3.0-liter inline-six cranking out 355 horsepower and 401lb-tq. Part of the power it produces is thanks to an electric supercharger and a 48-volt hybrid system. This electric motor helps the Defender accelerate and optimizes fuel economy.
No matter which engine option you choose, the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Like most of the other Land Rover vehicles, the Defender is only available with all-wheel drive to traverse nearly any terrain.
