Before there was a little Tenere to excite adventure-touring fans and tempt riders over from sport-touring machines, there was a big Tenere. More specifically, the Yamaha Super Tenere, a 1200cc parallel-twin adventure machine set to take on BMW and KTM at their own game. For more than a decade, the Super T, which came to the U.S. in its sophomore season, circa 2012, has come to define Yamaha’s approach to adventure touring.
First off, the parallel-twin engine was selected to keep the Super Tenere narrow in the middle, something the BMW R series could not claim, while also reducing the engine’s length (front to rear), something that KTM sacrificed in choosing even a narrow-angle V-twin. And because BMW proved shaft drive was on the must-have list for adventure riders, the Super T had a shaft final drive, to go along with other GS-like features such as tubeless spoke wheels, a tall/narrow windscreen, and plenty of electronic controls. Yamaha even gave the Super T electronically adjustable suspension in the ES model, starting in 2014.
