BMW R1200GS / Adventure Lighting & Accessories
BMW R1200GS
No motorcycle better defines the modern era of the big-bore adventure tourer than BMW’s R1200GS. Since 2004, the “big GS” has been refined and reformed into the “ultimate ADV machine,” only surpassed by the quicker and technically more sophisticated R1250GS in 2019. But the 1200, which took over for the “oilhead” R1150GS for the 2004 model year, represented a huge leap in agility and performance, thanks to it being some 60 pounds lighter. And while BMW enthusiasts will always remember the R80G/S as the original, it’s this generation of R1200GS that riders remember the most clearly.
Not only was the R1200GS, both in its air-cooled iteration and the liquid-cooled version that arrived for the 2013 model year (2014 for the 1200GS LC Adventure), the archetype for large-displacement adventure tourers, it arrived at the time of “maximum farkling,” where adventurers were learning what to bring and how to best travel to the corners of the globe on large dual-sport machines.
This generation of BMW’s adventure machines are central to DENALI’s development efforts, a machine we picked first for some of our most innovative products. For example, the R1200GS and GS Adventure were the first applications of the groundbreaking CANsmart Accessory Controller, which allows two sets of high-intensity LED driving lights, a SoundBomb horn, and a brilliant DENALI B6 tail light to be controlled through the BMW’s CAN bus system. And that means you can turn the lights on and off and adjust their brightness right from the stock hand controls, and then take advantage of all the data running through the GS’s veins. The onboard computer can flash the B6 brake light or have the driving lights flash when the horn is activated. And so much more, but BMW’s move to an advanced CAN bus system gave DENALI the chance to develop a series of interlocking technologies to make riders safer and to greatly ease installation of lights, horn, and brake light.
Of course, that’s just part of DENALI’s catalog for the BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models from 2004 to 2019. There is a range of bike-specific mounts by model year and for different versions—because the bodywork and fairings are different, the straight-GS and GS Adventure models have different light mount, for example. There’s a crazy-clever horn mount to tuck the SoundBomb out of the way on most BMWs in this GS generation. And there are other adapters and light mounts that allow the big GS to carry any of the DENALI motorcycle driving lights, from the seven-LED D7 to the compact DM. So if you’ve just purchased a BMW R1200GS or GS-Adventure from 2004 to 2019, let us help you outfit it just how you want it.
