When Yamaha launched the Niken at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, there was one question on everyone’s lips – what even is this thing? Is it a motorcycle? Is it a trike? Whatever the Niken is, it’s sure to turn some heads when you take it out to the street.

Yamaha itself classified the Niken as a motorcycle, and hey, who are we to argue with the people who made it? What we do know is that despite its unusual looks, this three-wheeler is a lot of fun to ride. Its leaning multi-wheel technology makes it surprisingly agile, it really doesn’t take up much more space on the road width-wide than a regular bike, and although its looks can be divisive, it’s definitely a dynamic machine.

Equipped with an 847cc engine and a whole gamut of rider aids, Yamaha Niken makes for a comfortable, confidence-inspiring sport touring experience. The manufacturer’s goal was to create a bike with more cornering grip and they’ve succeeded. The Niken’s additional front wheel doubles the amount of grip on the road, and the unique chassis and suspension system lets you lean until sparks fly without losing traction on the road. This bike is really in its element on cold and wet mountain roads where regular bikes would struggle to keep their wheels on the road.
